Reel Epics on Lockdown

The screening begins

The screening begins

A couple of weeks ago Reel Epics teamed up with Alive Africa and SevaUnite to host a private screening to juvenile offenders awaiting trial in Pollsmoor Prison. We screened Finding Freedom and ManUp!, two films that focus on themes of rehabilitation and the men featured in the films coming face to face with the events that led to their incarceration. Brian Bergman from SevaUnite joined us on the day and took the young offenders through some simple yoga exercises between the screenings, thus introducing the yoga programme that SevaUnite is teaching in various prisons across the Western Cape, including a hugely successful yoga teacher trainer’s correspondence course. One of the highlights of the day was when Franklin and Malcolm, the stars of Finding Freedom, got up to speak and share some of their own stories with the young men, many of whom come from the same communities that Franklin and Malcolm are from. It was humbling to be a part of such an exchange and we hope to partner with DCS and continue to do many more screenings in prisons across South Africa. A big thank you goes to Lawies Davids for helping us set up the screening, we look forward to working with him again. It was also an absolute pleasure to work with Dani and Harry Boden who set up their epic sound and got the reel spinning.

Our next private screening will be held in the women’s section and we can’t wait to hear the female perspective on two very masculine stories. Watch this space.
